Check Into Cash Joins Manning in Helping Shooting Victims

TumblrRedditBlogger PostWordPressDelicious

Check Into Cash announced today that the company has joined Peyton Manning in supporting the families of those who lost their lives as well as those who were wounded in the tragic shootings on July 16.

The company’s CEO and founder Allan Jones said the company would donate $10,000 to the Chattanooga Heroes Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, which was established by Manning following the tragedy.

“Check Into Cash supports Chattanooga and we wanted the families and others affected by the events on July 16 to know they are not alone,“ Jones said. “I ask others across the United States to join us in saluting the five servicemen who lost their lives, as well as the brave police officer who risked his life to protect others. We also want to acknowledge the first responders who arrived quickly to help.”

Steve Scoggins, Check Into Cash President, said the $10,000 donation would help provide for the future of the families affected by the shooting.

“That is what is really important,” Scoggins said. “By asking others to join Peyton and Check Into Cash in this effort we are sending a message to these families that you are not alone – we are here for you always.”

The Chattanooga Heroes Fund will provide a continuation of financial support to help the families and individuals directly affected by the shooting meet longer-term financial need. A spokesperson for the fund said it is intended to bridge the gap between shorter-term support and future challenges the families and/or individuals stand to face in the coming years.

“We deeply appreciate Peyton Manning for stepping up for these families through the Chattanooga Heroes Fund and call on others to help in recognizing the noble actions of the servicemen who sacrificed and risked their own lives last week,” Scoggins said.

The Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga (CFGC) is Chattanooga’s oldest community-owned foundation. CFGC has more-than 50 year track record of managing funds dedicated to addressing areas of critical need in the greater Chattanooga community, including the administration of more than 350 funds totaling more than $100 million dollars in assets, and more than $14 million grants in 2014 alone.

Donations to the Chattanooga Heroes Fund from individuals, companies and organizations are welcome in any amount and can be made online at CFGC.org. Scoggins said for more information, those who want to donate can call the foundation at  (423) 265-0586.

Check Into Cash was founded by Jones in Cleveland, Tennessee, in 1993. The Check Into Cash brand is state regulated and offers customers a wide variety of financial solutions. Two Tennessee Family Businesses Sponsor Official Virginia Historic Highway Marker Commemorating Thaxton Switch Train Wreck of 1889

TumblrRedditBlogger PostWordPressDelicious

Thaxton, VA – A new Virginia Department of Historic Resources state marker along West Lynchburg Salem Turnpike in Bedford County that recognizes a tragedy long ago is the result of strong cooperation between the Commonwealth of Virginia and two Tennessee companies committed to preserving the memory of the Thaxton Switch Train Wreck of 1889.

The highway marker unveiled today (May 19) recalls a devastating train accident from Virginia history that claimed at least 18 lives. The commemorative sign, and an accompanying celebration of its installation, was jointly sponsored by Hardwick Clothes Inc. – America’s oldest tailor-made clothing manufacturer – and Check Into Cash, America’s original short-term lender. Both companies are based in Cleveland, TN, where a monument stands honoring three local victims of the wreck – William Steed, John Hardwick and William Marshall.
Momentum to establish a permanent Virginia memorial began to build last year when Allan Jones, a philanthropist and Check Into Cash founder and CEO, realized none existed in the Old Dominion.

“The Thaxton crash has been called one of Cleveland’s most infamous tragedies because three prominent citizens were killed, but those men are already recognized with our Cleveland memorial,” said Jones. “When I learned no historical marker had ever been placed here in Virginia to honor the other victims, I wanted to get this changed as soon as possible. The ceremony today is for Virginia.”

Jones’ attention was redrawn to the wreck in April 2014 when a car crashed into the memorial in Cleveland that was dedicated in 1890, one year after the tragic wreck. Further research led Jones to discover that the Cleveland men on board the train were bound for New York ahead of a planned international trip to Paris, France. That was a big deal in those days. In fact, a crowd of more than 2,000 people cheerily bade them bon voyage as the train departed. Cleveland citizens were understandably devastated when news arrived that the three men had been killed, and that only Steed’s remains were recovered.

The train wreck happened on July 2, 1889. According to historic accounts, severe weather was a precipitating factor. A heavy storm flooded Wolf Creek in Bedford County. The resulting saturation destabilized an embankment known as Newman’s Fill. It collapsed under the weight of the Norfolk & Western Passenger Train Number Two around 1:25 a.m. that fateful day, and the train careened into the void.

That event remains an important moment in the history of Cleveland, TN, which Mayor Tom Rowland, the city’s longest-serving mayor, affectionately refers to as “the best little big town in America.”

The “1889 Thaxton Train Wreck” marker located at 5013 West Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, also known as U.S. Route 460, sits just west of Thaxton, in Bedford County. The marker is sponsored by the Allan Jones Foundation, which covered the cost of the marker’s manufacture. The sign was approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources in September 2014.

Virginia’s historical highway marker program, which began in 1927 with the installation of the first historical markers along U.S. Route 1, is considered the oldest such program in the nation. Currently there are more than 2,500 official state markers.

Today marks the beginning of the Mule Day celebrations in Columbia, TN, and the Cashdales are gearing up for the Mule Day Parade this Saturday, April 11. The Cashdales are a matching team of black and white Clydesdale horses owned by Check Into Cash, a national leader in alternative financial services.

“The Mule Day Parade is one of our favorite stops on tour,” said Check Into Cash President Steve Scoggins. “The Cashdales really enjoy the fun atmosphere and the smiling faces.”

The parade begins at 11 a.m. and heads north along Carmack Boulevard, turning left onto West 7th Street, and ending at the main gate of Columbia Academy, just past the railroad tracks. Check Into Cash completes gift to Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame, museum

TumblrRedditBlogger PostWordPressDelicious

WATERLOO, IA — Check Into Cash this week gave its final pledge installment to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, completing a $30,000 commitment to the Iowa-based center.

Check Into Cash Founder Allan Jones is well known for being a supporter of wrestling and athletics. Jones, who was a high school wrestler, has made numerous contributions to athletics including the Allan Jones Aquatic Center at the University of Tennessee and state-of-the-art wrestling centers at Cleveland and Bradley Central high schools in his hometown of Cleveland, Tenn. Those two high school wrestling programs have placed first and second in the state of Tennessee for three consecutive years.

“Wrestling and athletics teach leadership and strong character and Check Into Cash is pleased to support these worthwhile projects,” Jones said. “Iowa is the national epicenter for wrestling and Check Into Cash is proud to support the hall of fame and museum that bears the name of a national icon such as Dan Gable.”

In 1972 Dan Gable became the first American to win a World and Olympic title in consecutive years. After winning the World Championships in 1971, Gable won the gold medal at the Munich Olympics without surrendering a single point in his six matches. He also amassed numerous titles and records as a collegiate and high school wrestler in Iowa. Gable later coached Olympic and international teams, and led the University of Iowa to unparalleled success including a stint of nine consecutive NCAA titles and numerous other accolades.

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum provides free wrestling seminars with world class athletes throughout the year. The Gable Museum also recently partnered with the Boys & Girls Club and United Sport & Athlete for an ongoing wrestling club.

Kyle Klingman, director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, said the Check Into Cash gift will go far in preserving the history of the sport as well as developing the future of wrestling.

“This generous contribution to our organization allows us to continue important programming that involves youth,” Klingman said. “We are grateful to Allan Jones and Check Into Cash for believing in our efforts.”

Payday advance customers speak out to Congress

TumblrRedditBlogger PostWordPressDelicious

The payday lending industry has released a new video featuring several of the tens of thousands of customer letters sent to Congress in recent weeks.

“While the letters speak for themselves, this new video gives viewers real appreciation for the customers who want continued access to payday advances,” said D. Lynn DeVault, Board Chair, Community Financial Services Association of America.

“Payday lending customers sometimes need a few hundred dollars to make ends meet between paychecks,” said DeVault. “These are real people, facing real life circumstances. Unfortunately, in media coverage and during policy debates, the quiet voices of customers are overshadowed by activists who would like to see payday lending eliminated.”

“The video gives a voice to a handful of customers, representing the 19 million households who used payday advances last year,” DeVault concluded.

More than 10,000 customers of Check Into Cash joined the letter writing campaign.
